Soy Wax: Sourced From | Soybean Plants
Benefit: Skin Moisturizing, Clean Burning
A common question we get at Angels and Sages is what kind of wax do you use, and why did you pick that wax?
We use soy wax because it's easy to work with. Our packaging comes in a big box, and the wax is in the form of loose flakes.
Soy wax comes from the oil in soybeans. After harvest, it's cleaned, cracked, dehulled, and rolled into flakes. These are the flakes we use to create candles.
Soy is easy to work with, is a natural product, and burns clean. For us, this is a big win in terms of clean air. A bonus? You can use it as a skin moisturizer.
DIY Candle Recipe
So, how can you use soy wax to make your candles?
Gather ingredients:
Gather your supplies. You will need a double boiler, thermometer, a wick, some superglue, a jar, fragrance or essential oils of your choice, and some soy wax.
How much wax do you need? The answer will depend on your jar size. If it's a 4-ounce jar, you will need 4 ounces of wax.
How much fragrance or essential oil do you need for your candle DIY?
A safe measure for beginning candle making is 5%-7% oil to wax weight. Example: If you have a 10-ounce jar, you will need .5 ounces of fragrance/essential oil.
Start by gluing your wick into your candle jar. Then bring your soy wax to 180 degrees. You can use a double boiler stovetop method. Let cool to about 170 and add your fragrance. Stir. Pour contents into your jar and let cool thoroughly.
Once cool, trim your wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax. If your wax isn't pretty -- no problem-- take a hairdryer to the cooled candle and melt just the top. It will cool again with an excellent finish.
